Along with our series through Lamentations, in an effort to help everyone enter into the season of Lent deeply and personally, we are inviting you to write a Letter of Lament. Consider writing a letter of lament as a response to this invitation from God’s Word to “pour out your heart before him.” Lamentations give expression to the dark recesses of the soul we often keep hidden from the light of day, from ourselves, and from God. Because God knows us in our depths more deeply than we know ourselves (Ps. 139:1-2), nothing—no question or thought or feeling or doubt or fear—is off limits to express to him. He already knows. He calls us, even dares us, to give the most honest expression that we can put into words, sometimes clumsily through groans, so that we can find forgiveness and healing—and ultimately hope.
