Advent Readings 2017

Advent is what we call the four Sundays leading up to Christmas Day. Advent is a season of preparation and expectation. As we go through this season of expectation together, we will be reading through these Advent readings. Each day of the week, we will be reading the prayer at the top, the assigned Scripture, and the same closing prayer together. Please take these home and join us reading through this!

Advent Week 1 - Hope

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Pray this every day before the Scripture reading.

We are captive and exiled, O God, because we have, each in our own way, chosen to walk away from you. We confess that we have placed our hope in lesser things. We are lost and in need of your help. Come, Lord Jesus. Forgive and restore us. Guide and deliver us. Renew our hope. Amen.

READINGS FOR WEEK 1

Read the Scripture assigned for the day.

  • Sunday: Isaiah 2:1-5

  • Monday: Mark 13:35-37

  • Tuesday: Isaiah 11:1-5

  • Wednesday: Isaiah 11:6-10

  • Thursday: Matthew 7:24-27

  • Friday: Matthew 9:27-31

  • Saturday: Isaiah 40:1-5

CLOSING PRAYER

Read this every day after the Scripture reading.

Stir up your power, O Lord, and with great might come among us; and, because we are sorely hindered by our sins, let your bountiful grace and mercy speedily help and deliver us; through Jesus Christ our Lord, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, be honor and glory, now and forever. Amen.

Advent Week 2 - Peace

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Pray this every day before the Scripture reading.

We have, O God, each in our own way, forgotten your Law and your love for us. We have, too often, given ourselves to powers and practices that would destroy peace. We are lost, in need of your help. Come, Lord Jesus. Forgive and restore us. Guide and deliver us. Renew our peace. Amen.

CLOSING PRAYER

Read this every day after the Scripture reading.

Merciful God, you sent your messengers the prophets to preach repentance and prepare the way for our salvation. Give us grace to heed their warnings and forsake our sins, that we may greet with joy the coming of Jesus Christ our Redeemer, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

Advent Week 3 - Joy

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Pray this every day before the Scripture reading.

Lord, we have neglected Advent disciplines. We’ve crowded them out with Christmas celebrations that arrive too early and with our anxieties, selfishness and lack of trust. Because of this, we have forgotten you and we are joyless. We are lost, in need of your help. Come, Lord Jesus. Forgive and restore us. Guide and deliver us. Renew our joy. Amen.
